Guava bbq sauce

Guava barbecue sauce gives traditional barbecue a great kick of tropical sweet flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 cups brown sugar
  • 1 cups ketchup
  • 1 cup guava marmalade
  • ½ cup red wine vinegar
  • 1 ½ tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons dry mustard
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 ½ teaspoons black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon mild hot sauce

Instructions

  • In a medium sized bowl, add in the guava marmalade, ketchup, vinegar, worcestershire and brown sugar. Mix to combine
  • To the bowl the remaining ingredients (mustard, paprika, salt, pepper) and hot sauce if desired. Mix to combine.
  • Add the sauce to a deep saucepan and set it over low heat. Allow to simmer for about 5-10 minutes to ensure the brown sugar has fully dissolved. Remove from heat and allow to cool

​Storage 

Store your homemade guava sauce in an airtight container or mason jar for upto 2 weeks in a completely cool place or refrigerator. 

Can you freeze this guava barbeque sauce?

Yes you can. To freeze guava barbecue sauce, transfer it to a freezer bag labeled with the date. Squeeze out all the excess air, secure the bag, and lay flat in the freezer. Freeze for up to three months. Thaw it in the fridge overnight. 

Variations for guava barbecue sauce

  • Looking for an extra smokey flavor? Add some liquid smoke
  • Don't have red wine vinegar? Opt instead of apple cider vinegar 
  • Want to give this sauce an extra kick? Add in some cayenne pepper or sriracha 
  • Feel your sauce is too thick? Add a half cup water .
  • Don't have access to guava marmelade? In a small sauce pan over medium heat simmer a cup of water and 1 cup of large pieces of guava paste. Mix until the guava paste is melted down and a sauce forms.
