Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups Cooked Ropa Vieja
  • 8 slices Swiss Cheese
  • 12 Hawaiian Rolls

Sazon Completa Butter

  • 4 Tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 Teaspoon sazon completa

Instructions

  • Place your cooked ropa vieja into a fine mesh strainer and strain the excess liquid from the meat onto a bowl. This will help avoid having soggy bread buns.
  • Slice your Hawaiian rolls carefully in half.
  • On the bottom roll, add your strained Ropa Vieja.
  • Over the Ropa Vieja, layer on your cheese of choice. Place the top half of the rolls over the cheese.
  • Melt the butter in a microwave safe bowl and add the sazon completa, then mix to combine.
  • Brush the sazon completa butter over the top of the rolls.
  • Bake for 10 minutes and then serve immediately.

Variations and substitutions for these shredded beef sandwiches

Here are some delicious variations and substitutions for Cuban ropa vieja sliders. Whether you're adjusting for taste, dietary needs, or what you have on hand, these swaps keep the spirit of the dish while adding your own twist.

Bread Substitutions

  • Brioche slider buns – Buttery and soft, similar sweetness to Hawaiian rolls.
  • Potato rolls – Slightly less sweet but still fluffy and tender.
  • Mini Cuban rolls – For a more traditional Cuban flavor profile.
  • Pretzel slider buns – Add a salty contrast to the savory beef.
  • Gluten-free slider buns – Great for accommodating dietary restrictions.

Cheese Variations

  • Provolone – Mild and melty, similar to Swiss but less nutty.
  • Mozzarella – Super melty and mild, great if you want the beef to shine.
  • Pepper Jack – Adds a subtle kick of heat.
  • White American cheese – Ultra creamy and melts beautifully.
  • Havarti – Buttery and smooth with a slightly sweet finish.

Flavor Enhancements & Add-Ins

  • Sliced pickles – Adds tangy crunch, similar to Cuban sandwiches.
  • Caramelized onions – Boosts sweetness and depth.
  • Roasted red peppers – Adds smoky flavor.
  • Spicy mustard or garlic aioli – For extra richness and zing.
  • Fresh cilantro – Brightens the savory filling.

Topping & Finish Variations

  • Everything bagel seasoning – For texture and savory crunch.
  • Sesame seeds – Classic slider look.
  • A light honey butter glaze – Enhances the sweet and savory balance.

Dietary Adjustments

  • Low-carb option – Serve the ropa vieja and cheese in lettuce wraps instead of rolls.
  • Dairy-free cheese – Use plant-based slices that melt well.

Storage Instructions for these beef sliders

If your sliders are already assembled (ropa vieja + Swiss cheese + Hawaiian rolls):

Refrigerator Storage

  • Cool first: Let sliders cool to room temperature (no more than 1 hour).
  • Wrap tightly: Use plastic wrap or aluminum foil, or store in an airtight container.
  • Refrigerate: Store at 40°F (4°C) or below.
  • Best eaten within: 3–4 days

Storing the Ropa Vieja (Separately)

If you want the best texture, store components separately.

Refrigerator:

  • Store in an airtight container.
  • Keeps for 3–4 days.

Freezer:

  • Cool completely.
  • Store in freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bag.
  • Remove excess air.
  • Freeze for up to 3 months.

Reheating Tips for Best Texture

To prevent soggy rolls:
  • Reheat sliders uncovered for last 5 minutes to crisp tops.
  • If microwaving (not ideal), place a paper towel underneath to absorb moisture.
  • Add a small splash of beef broth before reheating if meat seems dry.
