Top tips
Handling the peppers can cause a burning sensation on your skin. Best practice is to wear gloves while handing the peppers.
The seeds and membranes (the white parts inside the pepper)from the habanero peppers are very spicy. Be sure to remove them.
If you're not using gloves, be sure to wash your hands with soap and rubbing alcohol after handling these peppers. Do NOT touch your mouth or eyes after touching these peppers.
Variations and substitutions
Variations
- Make it milder: Replace the habanero with a jalapeño or poblano pepper for a salsa with less heat.
- Turn up the spice: Add an extra habanero or a serrano pepper if you prefer an even spicier salsa.
- Add more fruit: Mix in diced mango, peaches, or papaya for a tropical fruit salsa with even more sweetness.
- Roast the pineapple: Grill or roast the pineapple before mixing the salsa for a smoky, caramelized flavor.
- Add avocado: Fold in diced avocado just before serving for a creamy contrast to the sweet and spicy flavors.
- Blend it smooth: Pulse the salsa in a food processor for a smooth sauce that's perfect for tacos, grilled meats, or seafood.
Substitutions
- Garlic: Fresh garlic can be replaced with ½ teaspoon garlic powder per clove if needed, although fresh garlic provides the best flavor.
- Fresh pineapple: Canned pineapple (drained well) or frozen pineapple (thawed and drained) can be used if fresh isn't available, though fresh provides the best flavor and texture.
- Habanero peppers: Substitute jalapeños for a milder salsa, serrano peppers for medium heat, or poblano peppers for a smoky, mild option.
- Red onion: White onion, sweet onion, or shallots make excellent substitutes.
- Fresh cilantro: Replace with fresh parsley if you don't enjoy cilantro or prefer a different herb.
- Lime juice: Fresh lemon juice can be used in a pinch, though lime juice offers the brightest, most authentic flavor.
Storage for this habanero salsa
- Refresh before serving: Add a squeeze of fresh lime juice and a sprinkle of chopped cilantro just before serving to brighten the flavors and make the salsa taste freshly made.
- Refrigerate promptly: Transfer the pineapple habanero salsa to an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- Stir before serving: The pineapple will release some of its natural juices as it sits, so give the salsa a good stir before serving to redistribute the flavors.
- Enjoy it fresh: For the best texture and flavor, enjoy the salsa within the first 24–48 hours, when the pineapple is at its freshest and the vegetables are still crisp.
- Drain excess liquid if needed: If the salsa becomes a little watery after storing, simply pour off any excess liquid and stir before serving.
- Do not freeze: Freezing is not recommended, as the fresh pineapple, onions, cilantro, and peppers will lose their crisp texture and become watery once thawed.
