Not a fan of Passion Fruit Liqueur? Opt instead for Raspberry, cherry, or lemon liqueurs. Other options are sour apple schnapps or blue curacao. You can also omit the liqueur completely for a classic margarita recipe.
If you don't have Cointreau available, you can use Triple Sec or orange liqueur.
If you're not a fan of simple syrup, opt for Agave nectar instead.
Don't have any fresh limes handy? You can use for bottled lime juice, sour mix, or lemon juice.
Don't have black salt available for your glass rim? Opt instead for black sugar sprinkles.
Don't want to use activated charcoal? You can opt instead for black gel food coloring.

Equipment needed for this spooky margarita

Activated Charcoal

Variations and Substitutions for a Black Magic Margarita
Skip the activated charcoal: Black gel food coloring can create the dramatic dark appearance without activated charcoal. This is also an important substitution because activated charcoal can interfere with the absorption of some oral medications.
Switch up the passion fruit liqueur: Not a fan of passion fruit? Try raspberry, cherry, or lemon liqueur instead. Sour apple schnapps or blue curaçao can also add a fun flavor twist. You can even leave out the flavored liqueur for something closer to a classic margarita.
Swap the Cointreau: Triple sec or another orange liqueur works well in place of Cointreau while maintaining that classic citrus flavor.
Use agave instead of simple syrup: Substitute agave nectar for the simple syrup to sweeten your margarita. Start with a small amount and adjust to your preferred sweetness.
Try a different citrus: Fresh lime juice provides the best classic margarita flavor, but bottled lime juice, sour mix, or lemon juice can work when fresh limes aren't available.
Change the spooky rim: If you can't find black lava salt, use black sugar sprinkles to give the glass a festive Halloween look with a sweeter finish.
How to Store a Black Magic Margarita
For the best flavor, Black Magic Margaritas are best served fresh, but you can prepare the cocktail mixture ahead of time. Combine the tequila, liqueurs, lime juice, and sweetener in an airtight container or pitcher and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Wait to add ice, edible shimmer, garnishes, and the salted rim until just before serving.
If you have a leftover margarita, remove any ice before refrigerating it so the cocktail doesn’t become watered down. Store it covered in the refrigerator and give it a good stir or shake before serving over fresh ice.
