variations and substitutions for this peach pico de gallo
Variations
- Make it milder: Replace the habanero with a jalapeño or poblano pepper for a salsa with less heat.
- Turn up the spice: Add an extra habanero or a serrano pepper if you love extra spicy salsa.
- Add fruit: Mix in diced mango, pineapple, or nectarines for a tropical twist.
- Roast the ingredients: Roast the peaches, peppers, and onions before chopping for a smoky, caramelized flavor.
- Add avocado: Fold in diced avocado just before serving for a creamy, refreshing variation.
- Make it chunky or smooth: Leave the salsa chunky for scooping with chips or pulse it in a food processor for a smoother consistency.
Substitutions
- Fresh peaches: Nectarines, mangoes, or frozen peaches (thawed and drained) work well if fresh peaches aren't in season.
- Habanero peppers: Substitute jalapeños for a milder salsa, serrano peppers for medium heat, or poblano peppers for a subtle smoky flavor.
- Red onion: White onion, sweet onion, or shallots can be used instead.
- Fresh cilantro: Replace with fresh parsley if you prefer a different herb or aren't a fan of cilantro.
- Lime juice: Fresh lemon juice can be used in a pinch, though lime juice provides the brightest, most authentic flavor.
- Honey (if used): Maple syrup or agave nectar can be substituted for a vegan option, or omit the sweetener altogether if your peaches are especially ripe and sweet.
Storage for this spicy salsa
- Refresh before serving: Add a squeeze of fresh lime juice and a sprinkle of chopped cilantro just before serving to brighten the flavors and make the salsa taste freshly made.
- Refrigerate promptly: Transfer the peach habanero salsa to an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- Stir before serving: As the peaches release their natural juices, the salsa may become slightly watery. Give it a good stir before serving to redistribute the flavors.
- Enjoy it fresh: This salsa tastes best within the first 24–48 hours, when the peaches are at their freshest and the flavors are the brightest.
- Drain excess liquid if needed: If extra liquid collects in the container after storing, simply pour off a little before serving to maintain the perfect chunky consistency.
- Do not freeze: Freezing is not recommended, as the fresh peaches, onions, and cilantro will lose their crisp texture and become watery after thawing.
