Domincan hot chocolate is perfect for winter. Dark chocolate combined with two types of milk and warm spices makes for the ultimate cup of hot chocolate.

    Why you'll love it

Much like my Colombian hot chocolate recipe, this hot chocolate is delicious with its complex flavors. Dark chocolate combined with the unique flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves creates an amazing flavor profile that warms you up on the coldest days.

    What is dominican hot chocolate?

Dominican hot chocolate is made using a dark unsweetened chocolate bar. It can be made in hot water or milk. This hot chocolate is usually made with a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Sugar is added to one's own preference.

The drink has a much stronger and complex flavor compared to American hot chocolate.

Ingredients needed for this chocolate caliente

    • Dominican chocolate, I used Embajador.
    • Whole Milk
    • Evaporated Milk
    • Cinnamon Sticks
    • Nutmeg
    • Cloves
    • Whipped cream (optional)

Instructions to make this hot cocoa

    • Place your chocolate, Cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg in a medium saucepan over medium heat
    • Add in your evaporated milk and whole milk, constantly stirring using a wooden spoon or whisk until milk simmers and chocolate melts. The hot chocolate should be frothy from the constant whisking
    • Using a fine mesh strainer, pour the hot chocolate into your mug of choice
    • Top with whipped cream (if desired) and garnish with a cinnamon stick.

    Variations/Substitutions

Want a dairy free hot chocolate? Swap out the dairy ingredients for non dairy options. You can use coconut milk or almond milk, coconut whipped cream, coconut evaporated milk and vegan dark chocolate instead.

Don't like whipped cream? Opt for some toasted marshmallows instead or simply omit the whipped cream altogether.

Don't have access to chocolate from Dominican Republic? You can opt for very dark chocolate instead, organic cacao. In a pinch, Mexican hot chocolate or Colombian hot chocolate bars will also work.

Like your cup of hot chocolate on the sweeter side? Add additional sugar or sweetener of choice to taste.

My name is Cari and I'm the person behind FatgirlHedonist.com. I'm born and raised in Miami (Hialeah if you'd like specifics) and proud Latina. I'm a single mom to a very curious toddler. I completed a culinary program in high school that made my love of food blossom, but my career went in a very different direction. No matter what turns my life has taken, cooking, baking and eating have always been three of my favorite activities. I'm lucky enough that I can have this blog as an outlet for those three passions.
