Take your margaritas up a level by adding sweet guava nectar! This tropical twist on the traditional Margarita makes for the perfect refreshing summer cocktail!
Growing up as a Cuban in South Florida, eating guava is part of the culture. So adding this fun spin seemed natural to me. This is a great drink for Cinco De Mayo or any hot summer day.
Ingredients
Guava nectar Tequila Cointreau Fresh lime juice | Simple syrup Sugar sprinkles Lime & guava slices Cup of ice |
Instructions
- Prepare your glass by running a slice of lime around the rim of each glass and dip the edge into a small amount of sugar sprinkles.
- Add the guava nectar, tequila, cointreau, lime juice, simple syrup and ice to a cocktail shaker. Shake for 15 seconds.
- Strain into a prepared margarita glass and add your lime and guava slices for garnish.
Variations
- Spicy guava margarita: If you like your sweet with a little spice, muddle a jalapeño in your cocktail shaker before pouring in the rest of your ingredients. Add a little cayenne pepper to your sugar sprinkles to rim the glass.
- Peach or Mango margarita: Replace the guava nectar with your choice of fruit nectar for a different kind of margarita
- Frozen guava margaritas: Freeze the guava nectar in an ice cube tray. Then, blend the frozen guava cubes with the rest of the ingredients into a slush. Serve with a straw.
Substitutions
- If you don't have Cointreau available, you can use Triple Sec
- If you're not a fan of simple syrup, opt for Agave instead.
- Don't have any fresh limes handy? You can use for bottled lime juice instead.
- Don't like sugar on your glass rim? Go the traditional route and use salt instead.
Equipment
For this you'll need a cocktail shaker and margarita glasses
Top tip
- Fresh guava vs. store bought nectar: If you're able to get fresh guavas, you can make juice out of them and use that for these margaritas. I opt for using guava nectar becuase it's more readily accessible and much more convenient.
- Sugar vs salt: Classic margaritas use salt on the rim, but with fruity drinks or for people who don’t like salt, using sugar instead is a great alternative.
- Chill the glasses. This drink tastes best when it is extra cold. If you have the time, chill the margarita glasses in the fridge.
